It’s that time of year again and that means winter is right around the corner.  I don’t know about you but my acne problems seem to be the worst when it becomes winter time.  I was talking to my dermatologist about it the other day and he gave me a few good tips that are worth mentioning about winter and acne.

1)       Moisturize:  When it comes to the winter one of the problems most of us run into is our skin drying out.  There is generally a lot ways to clear acne in the winterless humidity in the air during winter, especially in the north and so our skin becomes chapped and torn.  This provides a lot of breeding ground for bacteria to grow and oil to collect and thus greatly increases the chance of acne.  Find a moisturizer that is non-oil based and use it often!

2)      Protect the skin from the cold:  Regardless of how much you moisturize, if your skin becomes exposed to the freezing cold and high winds that winter can bring it won’t take long for that moisture to be ripped away.  Protect your skin during the winter and bundle up!

3)      Easy on the acne meds:  Because the winter time is already doing a good job of drying out your skin, give the acne meds that you’re using another look.  If you’re using benzoyl peroxide, you might want to consider cutting down on it a bit if you’re having problems.

Hopefully through the winter you can continue to keep your acne under control.  Remember to moisturize, bundle up, and watch over drying due to medicating and you should be fine.  Merry Christmas!
