Here’s the problem.  Its time to study for mid terms or finals and you’ve been burning the midnight oil for the last couple nights.  After pulling a few late night cram sessions you wake up to find some pimples on your normally fair skin!  Can not getting enough sleep really cause acne?

Yes and no, as far as the current research out there indicates.  A lack of sleep in itself does not seem to cause acne and there is no scientific proof as of yet that directly links sleep deprivation with acne.  However, it is very well known and quite proven that acne can be flared up or made worse by stress and a lack of sleep puts a large amount of stress on your body.   This is thought provoking sleeping at nightbecause there are folks who have increased the amount of sleep that they get and getting more sleep has had a positive effect on their acne problem.  These folks though, were already not getting enough sleep so snoozing for an extra couple of hours a day is NOT going to help your problem unfortunately.

So what can you do if you start to develop acne due to a lack of sleep?  For starters, you can get more sleep!  It’s widely known that the average human being needs nearly 8 hours of sleep a day to get sufficent rest.  In this day and age we’re lucky if we get 6 hours of sleep, but all that sleep you’ve been depriving yourself might actually be taking a toll on your health!  If you developed acne because you pulled a few late nighters and you generally sleep well otherwise, then I recommend being extra vigilent for the next couple days in washing your face.  Also changing your pillow cases so that you’re not sleeping on any oil that might have accumulated while sleeping actually makes a difference.  Other than that, the problem should go away itself within a few days provided that you get enough rest and keep your face clean.
